Redfish In Shallow Water: What Flies To Use In The Grass
Posted by dimefisher on Wednesday, August 20 @ 10:55:38 PDT
so I recently took my dads old browning 6 wt. rod and martin s.w. reel to a bay we fish in alot. we walked out a little ways and stopped walking and just started casting out sort of just waiting for fish to show up. and i turned around and saw a bunch of spl;ashes in the water on some flats.so i walked over and there were reds everywhere. i had on a shrimp fly and casted out to a few reds that were feeding on something they would not even touch the shrimp except for one 25 inch redfish.
so i traded that out for a gummy minnow and threw it out to them still nothing if anyone knows what redfish are eating in the grassflats could you tell me please

Different species of bait is prevalent in certain areas at certain times. I've caught redfish on a bunch of different fly patterns, but what usually is the deciding factor on whether or not the fish see the fly is the weight of it. |

Bland casting is not very productive. The crab pattern developed by Capt. Gordon Churchill in Morehead City is just a bunch of deer hair, brown feathers and some gold or bronze flash. Two strands of heavy mono serve as a weed guard. Probably any crab pattern will get a look It's more important to figure out which way the fish is heading and get the fly two feet in front of it. |
