What is the optimal casting distance that every fly fisherman should be able to cast before coming to fish the coast?

You'd be suprised how close snook, redfish, tarpon, bonefish and even permit will take a fly, but generally, if you can cast 50 feet into the wind, you'll do fine. Its not how far that matters most, its how accurately. I've seen guys land a fly in a coffee cup in any wind right handed and left handed at 80 feet.

I am with Headrush on this one.. 50 feet is fine. I think that it is more important to be able to read the fish.
