Florida Keys Tarpon: Feeding Ocean Fish
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Wednesday, May 28 @ 19:06:20 PDT
Feeding tarpon in clear water is not always an easy task. Many of the larger tarpon that we target in the tannic water of the Everglades readily eat flies thrown very close to their faces. Keys tarpon, especially ocean side fish spook easily at something splatting down on their heads, and are more prone to react more cooperatively when led, sometimes 15-20 feet.
Once you have placed your fly properly, generally you want to keep the fly moving slowly in their face as long as you possibly can. This means stripping long and slow while imparting some kind of extra wiggle, usually with the rod tip. If you are constantly getting denied, try a fly that works in a different part of the water column. I like carrying an assortment of bright flies, some that float, some that suspend, and some that sink.
