Bringing The North South: Chesapeake Crab Flies For Bonefish!
Posted by Jeepfish on Tuesday, January 29 @ 20:07:17 PST
Howdy gents,
I'm brand new to the forum here. What a relief to have found you all! I've been in Miami for four years now, loving everything Biscayne Bay has to offer. I am obsessed with bonefish! I always get a kick out of catching bonefish on crab patterns I once tied and threw for stripers. Originally dubbed the "Crab colored Clouser" by Joe Bruce formerly of the "Fisherman's Edge" in Catonsville, MD (author and good friend of Lefty), the pattern was originally a deep water clouser variation tied with tan, olive, and white bucktail with gold pearl flash and just a hint of a blue flashabou sort of wing. I have found this pattern to be excellent, especially if tied with a piece of mono for a weedguard, on grass flats around sand key and the finger flats near soldier key.
Copy and paste this link to check out a picture and the components. http://chemprof.tripod.com/ccclousr.htm
Give it a shot...you won't regret it. What do you guys recommend for crab pattern colorations? Any interesting varieties out there you've had great success with? Let me know! I look forward to posting often!

Re: Bringing The North South: Chesapeake Crab Flies For Bonefish! by hedrush999 on Tuesday, January 29 @ 20:26:49 PST http://www.fliesandfinssouth.com | | The way a clouser moves, and its profile, mimic a shrimp more than a crab in most of the bonefishing scenarios I have encountered. My best luck with crab flies has been by mimicking a crab crawling across the bottom, rather than darting up and down. With that said, I have really never fished a shrimp fly like I do a crab fly where my strips are long and slow so the fly stays on the bottom. With that said, I believe that fishing a shrimp pattern this way would be very effective, which would make the way the fly looks second in importance to how it is fished. My favorite clouser pattern is similar to this one, only I use lighter tans to make it blend in with a wider variety of bottom types, I put some rubber legs coming off for movement, which the clouser lacks, as well I tie some cross cut zonker after the eyes to give it a beefier profile. Dude I love bonefishing! |
