Tips, Ties And Tactics Louisiana Redfish: Fishing The Marsh For January Monsters

When the winter rolls around, most people think about heading to wild tropical locations in search of some of the best fishing opportunities of the year. Well overlooked are the marshes of southern Louisiana, which is probably the most healthy fishery this country has to offer. Hungry redfish move onto shallow mud flats year round in search of an easy meal. In January the bigger breeding fish can be plentiful, as they are looking to gorge post spawn.

Due to the water clarity (or lack of it), the first step is to locate the cleaner green water. The bigger fish will not normally be super shallow. Fishing real skinny can be productive for redfish in the 5-10 pound range, but the big boys will be in 2-3 feet of water. If an area seems void of life, move! Usually when you find mullet, black drum, or sheepshead, the redfish are close. These redfish eat readily, as long as they can see the fly and it is not stripped into them. Lead your fish with a heavy fly, let it sink, and twitch it when the fish is right in front of it....and hold on!

blah blah blah the weather sucks right now and you're sitting next to me blabbering on about how to set the hook and don't strip into them... The fact is you should be discussing carbon fiber, hydrodynamics, thermal dynamics, and psycho dynamics because that and shooting air soft guns is all you've really been up to lately-Dave! And oh yeah your forgot roll cast, doodle squating, and the fact that they actually have teeth assh%#@!!! Happy Birthday to ME!
