Estero Bay: Crab Flies, Seagrass, And Hungry Redfish

Estero Bay is located North of Naples, and South of Pine Island Sound. As far as sightfishing goes, it can be a fantastic chance to see snook, redfish, tarpon, and trout inshore in relatively clear water. Estero Bay consists of many mangrove islands and creeks, oyster bars, grass flats, as well as mud flats and hard sand. This bottom structure makes great habitat for resident and migrating redfish year round. The fall months have great potential in Estero Bay as the rains taper off, cleaning up the water, and the redfish seem to school up and do whatever they do.
On a strong outgoing tide, expect to see some shorelines with cleaner water than others. Redfish have a tendency to move tight to the shorelines, as well as mill around in the open. Keep a careful eye as they can be hard to spot if the tide isn't low enough or the fish are lying motionless. Estero reds seem to jump on a weighted crab pattern fly, but don't particularly like it slammed right on their heads. Try to land the fly 2-3 feet from the fish's nose so that it makes a plopping sound. This sound should get the fish's attention and it should race over and grab it. If there is no reaction, try to drag the fly slowly across the bottom before recasting. The dragging sound, as well as the mud trail the fly makes might entice a bite. Be instantly ready to strike as soon as the fly hits the water because any slack in the line can give the red the opportunity to spit it out before even coming tight.

This is my favorite red pattern for the estero bay. colors i usually match to the bottom i am fishing. and different than most fish i agree the louder you splat the fly with reds the better. you gotta get them to look up when they are tailing.
Puglisi minnows and polar minnows for snook in the passes and the groves. and don't forget the Naples local "gurgler" snook, trout and tarpon will hit er on the top water!

Those reds should be feeding great this week with the strong new moon tides. The big bulls have started moving in from the pass and will most likely be on the flats for a few weeks! Wait till you see the new fiddler I just tied up!!
