Pensacola: Florida Panhandle Fly Fishing

On a recent trip to Pensacola, FL to prefish for the Oberto Redfish Cup. I had some time to explore the inshore flyfishing possibilities. The Gulf Of Mexico is deep nearshore and the beaches are white sand and plentiful. The opportunities to catch fish on foot exist, but a sinking line of some sort is a necessity to keep the line below th waves. Utilizing a boat in the backcountry bays and creeks will most likely be the most productive way to fly fish the area.
The backcountry does offer flats of all sorts, grass, sand, and mud, but the fish seem to move on and off of these flats in the fall fairly quickly. Keep a keen eye on the tide charts, and when it is coming in, focus your efforts on the shallows. Do not neglect to cast the many docks and rock piles along the way as they seem to consistently hold a lot of bait, which in turn attracts the fish. If an epic redfish destination is what you are after, you might want to choose Louisiana instead. Oh yeah, watch out for the Gulf Breeze, FL Police, as they are one of the biggest speed traps in the country.

Night fishing with fly rods is very productive though. We consistently catch fish under the dock lights with small (#8) white clousers. |
