Saltwater Flies: How To Use A Popper
Posted by dimefisher on Monday, August 13 @ 11:14:07 PDT
I now have a shrimp fly, a shad, a crab, and two poppers. I would like to know exactly or get a rough idea of how to use them in bays or at the beach
for redfish, trout, and flounder in the Texas inshore waters.

Look for moving water on or near structure. Oyster bars, flats, potholes in the sea grass, can all be holding spots for fish. Try different retrieves...pop pop stop, pop pop pop, pop stop pop stop...see if you get some reactions. When one eats, remember not to rod set, strip set the line to really bury the hook.
When blind casting the other flies, try the same type of varied retrieves. As a standard, use brightly colored flies in lighter colored water, and darker flies in stained water.

Re: Saltwater Flies: How To Use A Popper by bonefisher on Thursday, August 30 @ 22:24:41 PDT | For your shrimp pattern fish it like a shrimp would swim... give it a few short strips and then one slow long one and repeat... that retrieve has worked for me for many species... also for sea trout i would suggest going to a fly shop and asking for Clouser Minnows. They are one of the best all around flies. They are simple and can be fished a different depths depending on the weight of the eyes... get a few in different color combinations and sizes. Clousers can catch almost anything.. i have caught everything from baby tarpon to rainbow trout on clousers... the chartruese and white worked best for me for trout in florida.
Good Luck,
