I would invest in either an 8 or 9 weight rod, with the best reel you can afford attached to it. The salt can be hell on gear, especially reels, and getting a decent one (Tibor, Bauer, Abel) will make sure it will last. I think a floating line would be the best place to start, as it is easiest to cast, and the most fished all around saltwater fly line anywhere. As far as flies go, start simple, clousers, deceivers, and maybe a popper or two will get you started and let you dial in on what the fish are eating in your neck of the woods. Then comes the fun part, tying your own patterns to perfectly match the conditions in your area. Welcome to the club, man! |
