Tips, Ties And Tactics Bonefish: Finding Fish During Seasonal Changes
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Monday, June 25 @ 16:16:52 PDT

Bonefish can be caught on fly in many ways. My favorite way to find fish is in groups of 1-5. I routinely go way out of my way in search of single fish while avoiding schools. Finding fish this way can be tough in the warmer months of the year. During the spring and summer months bonefish have a tendency to school up to spawn and feed, both in deeper water as well as in shallow water. When a bunch of big smart bonefish get together it can be very difficult to fool them as there are a lot of eyes on the lookout, and as getting the fly to them may be possible, little things like stripping the fly at the wrong time can spook the whole school.

When looking for more catchable singles and doubles, water temperature on a flat is a crucial element. Start off by locating a flat that holds fish that is near multiple sources of deeper water. I like to look for smaller flats rather than bigger ones because the bigger the flat the longer the water takes to circulate or move across it keeping it really warm. Once you have located some smaller flats, tide is critical. I have seen more schools of bones huddled up in corners or mangroves at high tide, that would otherwise be spread out throughout a flat at a lower tide. I prefer the first parts of the incoming tide, as the rush of cooler water onto a flat usually triggers movement and feeding of its resident bonefsh.
