Everglades National Park General Management Plan: Help South Florida Fly Fishing
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Thursday, June 07 @ 17:39:27 PDT
Recently there have been a bunch of meetings all around South Florida regarding proposals for general park management. Three out of four of these plans enormously limit motorized boat access from the Keys to Everglades City, and will have a huge impact on our fishery as well as our economy.
Everglades National Park is the third largest National Park in the lower 48 states, but is the only one at the doorstep of nearly 7 million people.
This is a strong statement, and can give those who have never visited it an idea of the management policies that must be in place to protect the park. These recent meetings are the Park Service's way of gathering peoples' ideas and feelings towards the propositioned plans. Some of these plans will basically destroy inshore fishing as we know it in South Florida, nd the only way to stop it is to voice our opinions.
For a general idea of what is being proposed please visit:

To voice your opinion, either post it here and I will forward it on, or visit:

If you have ever fished the glades, or would ever like to, please do your part and voice your opinions, or we will eat your children! he he

In my book USA is an exemple for recrational fishery management.
I understand that Everglades must be protected maybe more but there's no need to push it too far as in the D proposition : no motor in less than 3 feet of water wich would shut down 80 % percent of florida bay...how could you rich flamingo to islamorada...trolling motors or pole 30 miles ??
Never been to Florida yet but intend to fish there soon.
I heard that their reason was not so much about the fishery itself but it will anyway give a hard strike to the guides that work there and to the fishing tourism.
Management by boat size seems to me an acceptable way.
For area that have less than 3 feet of water maybe a restriction about the draft of the boat.
I also think that National Parks in general should only allow Catch and Release fishing.
How could I make some change in my country for recreational fishery (we dont have any management at all here) if I cant anymore talk about the great way it works in USA if they could reduce so much the recreational fishery in Everglades national park.
When I will come visit you and book some guides, I want to be able to fish and go to the place you go as I see on internet and videos. I want to be able to experiment the fishing in Everglades as I see it is now.
I sincerely hope for guides so the fishermans that live trought and thanks to the fishing tourism that the way there gonna change regulation in Everglades wont have a dramatical impact.
Hope the opinion of potiential tourists will count if they give their ideas or insentiv.
Keep faith
