Tips, Ties And Tactics Guadeloupe: A Fly Fishing Trip Of A Lifetime
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Sunday, April 22 @ 09:31:44 PDT

As of yesterday, I have a flight confirmed that takes me through Puerto Rico and on to Guadeloupe to meet up with Alexis and check out his fishery. Alexis is the only fly fishing guide in the country, and I am so excited to get to check out what Guadeloupe has to offer.

I will chronicle this adventure daily from 4-23 - 4-28 on this post and keep everyone informed as we explore this virgin fly fishery, and hopefully get me my first fly caught permit on the flats. STAY TUNED.............................................

Well, I have arrived in Guadeloupe and Alexis and Jessica have greeted me well. We pulled up to a flat right before sunset and saw a bunch of tailing bones before we even got out of the car. Got some shots but screwed them up. Oh well it was just a quick stop before dinner anyway. Should be hunting permit all day tomorrow. I will keep you posted.

Day 1:
Alexis and I got up early and drove to a flat for wade fishing bones and permits. As soon as we walked out there were permit tailing all over. We had 20 or so good chances at them, but no takers. We moved onto a different part of the flat and targeted bones. It was the first bone that I have ever hooked on a topless beach. Unfortunately I was distracted and lost the fish on a rock. Later on in the day I had a good shot at a tailing permit, on foot, of about 40+ pounds. My heart was beating out of my chest, but even though I know it saw the fly, it didn't like my offering. What a great day.

Day 2:
A change of pace. We took out his flats boat and did some exploring, and took turns fishing and poling. We caught snook, jacks, tarpon, and snapper. There are a bunch of places that Alexis took me to that reminded me of the everglades, and I felt right at home. The highlight of the day was a 12-15 pound snook in shallow mud, my favorite kind of snook, that I got a good shoot in front of, but it gave me "the fin" and slowly moved away down the shoreline.

Day 3 SUPER GRAND SLAM:

All I can say is wow...what a cool fishery. Alexis managed to guide me to a snook, tarpon, bnefish, and a permit. None of the fish were Monsters, but to be able to add a new country to the list of possible places to get the super grand slam is a really cool deal. As well, this was my first permit on fly, and I have been trying to trick one of these bastards for a while. It was so cool to get this permit, on foot nonetheless, with my own fly. It must have landed correct as it didnt hang up on the reef, and the permit tailed up on it for us. Today was the best day of my fly fishing carrer so far!!!!!

Dave,

You've out-done it again! You've travelled to a distant sight-fishing mecca and won the prize. I am so happy for you, I think I'll have a Kalik. You said, "All I can say is wow...what a cool fishery." That says volumes. I'll be interested to hear all the fine details. Have a safe journey home.

Day 4:
After a dinner of goat (thought it was lamb, but it was really good) and a good night's sleep, we awoke to a lot of wind and rain. We decided to keep it local and wait to see what the weather would do. Mid afternoon the sky cleared and we decided to give it one more try on a reef flat that we had fished a few days earlier, and saw many permit. Some of those permit were still there, and Alexis saw one mixed in with a school of bones. He made a great shot, and the permit hammered the fly before the bones could get to it. A quick run out to the reef and Alexis caught up with the fish and landed his nice little permit.
