Bonita Beach: Sight Casting Snook
Posted by bonefisher on Wednesday, April 18 @ 05:12:43 PDT
I was in bonita beach, FL for four days last week. I was plagued by heavy wind and rain for 3 of them. However, on the third day when the weather cleared up and the wind died down the snook were clearly visible as they swam around the shallows. I managed to hook several and land most. I would suggest wading in the water not to deep and stay very still, the fish get spooky easily and as a result get lock-jaw. I was fishing between two large rock piles that extended out a ways. Casting from the rocks was effective but the fish could break the line on the jagged roccks. Chartreuse Clousers with large dumbell "Real Eyes" worked the best. A normal retrieve works but it must be sped up if the fish starts to chase the fly. Also, if the fish aren't hitting back off for 20 minutes and let them calm down. If they are following the fly but not taking it, tone down the tippet to a 20lb or 15lb., but be careful to always use side pressure so the fish can't break the line on his gill plate if he jumps.
Also be careful not to attact to many spectators... once they figure out your catching snook they will start chucking anything into the water and scaring off the fish...
Good Luck,
Bonefisher
