Marathon Florida Keys: Boatless Fishing Spots
Posted by caddishead on Friday, March 16 @ 15:23:00 PDT
I will be heading to Marathon with my family April 15th for a week. We are staying on a private Island at the bottom of Marathon on the west side called Palm Island(can be seen on google earth). I don't have enough knowledge of the area and was wondering what flies, leaders, etc., I will want to bring for fishing from the shore and bridge leading to the Island. I would be surprised if I didn't see Tarpon cruising around. Looking to get in to some bone fish, maybe snapper, snook...anything. :-)
Any good spots within a short drive? Looks like and island if I drive south over the next bridge and fish from there...

Re: Marathon Florida Keys: Boatless Fishing Spots by bonefisher on Tuesday, March 27 @ 19:12:05 PDT | As far as flies, I would get a bunch of clousers and baitfish patterns, then get an assortment of gotchas and crazy charlie's for bonefish and jacks. Also get one or two big poppers, you never know what you will run into, and some smaller tarpon flies for baby tarpon. As far as leaders go I would buy a few of those premade tapered leaders, also get some seagaur's flourocarbon in 50-10lb test so that you can make your own custom leaders. For snook and Tarpon I would make 4 sections starting with 50 and ending with 20 or 25. With a section of 40lb and 30lbs. in between. For bonefish and jacks I would start with a 30lbs. butt section and end in a 10 or 15lbs. tippet. Also, bring the biggest rod you have maybe a 10 or 11 wt. and an 8wt so that you're ready for anything and put scientific anglers' saltwater light green floating WF line on your reels. That seems to be the best I think.
best of luck,
