Fly Fishing Florida Peacock Bass: Catch Them While Its Hot
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Wednesday, March 07 @ 12:59:48 PST
Every year in the spring for about the past 15 years, the peacock bass in the canals in and around South Miami bed up for their spawn. These canals are deep and usually sight fishing peacock bass is tough, but during the spawn, mature fish move up on the banks to get their groove on, and can be spotted and fly casted to with ease. A 5 or 6 weight rod is ideal with a floating or intermediate line, and a small colorful clouser usually does the trick. Fly fishing for peacocks can be done by foot, but Capt. Mark Hall, www.flyfishpeacocks.com will put you over fish, and has caught numerous large florida peacock bass on fly over the years.
This fishing is very urban, and the direct opposite of the clean flats of the Florida Keys. There is no need to be stealthy to get a peacock to come off it's bed and grab the fly. Multiple bad casts at the fish are sometimes what it takes to get them fired up, but it takes a very accurate shot to actually get them to eat the fly. The roll cast is primarily what you will use because of the tight quarters of the canals, and the long bomb cast can be saved for tarpon season. Give the peacock bass in Miami a try on a fly, its the only place in the country to catch one.
