Florida Flyfishng: Tarpon, Sailfish And Bonefish In January
Posted by luke on Wednesday, January 03 @ 20:09:04 PST
I am headed to Florida toward the end of January. I am going to be staying in the daytona beach shores and Orando area. I will however have transportation and I do not mind driving a good push somewhere. I am really interested in flyfishing for Tarpon. I would also like to possibly go for some bones or even sailfish.
Everything I have read tells me the tarpon run more toward march and bonefish are more abundant in the keys. Where do I begin can anyone give me some advice. Any info would be appreciated.

I will direct you to a post on F&F by Shaq
www.fliesandfins.com/article506.html
in which he describes great success with his wife and with redfish in waters not too far from Orlando in late February or early March.
I used to live in Miami and it takes all day to drive the length of Florida from Miami to Jacksonville. Orlando and Daytona are a substantial distance from South Florida and the Everglades, but, if you have the time you can do it (Don't you drive from Tennessee to the Salmon River at the drop of a hat?). I suggest that you pm Shaq about his nearby water (and guide) or that you pm MarshallD or hedrush (Dave) to get the info on how long a drive and the prospects for the end of January. Or maybe they will fill us all in here in the forum!
Have a great time!

Re: Florida Flyfishng: Tarpon, Sailfish And Bonefish In January by Luke on Thursday, January 04 @ 15:10:03 PST | Thanks for the tip Dave. I live in Maine and I do drive to the salmon river at the drop of a hat about a 6.5 hr drive so driving to big fish doesn't scare me. I really don't care much to fish for redfish but if that's what I am left with I will. I will send messages and see what I come up with. Thanks for you help.
Additional Ideas or tips would also be appreciated. |
