Must Have Baby Tarpon Fly: Enrico Puglisi Finger Mullet
Posted by marshalld on Wednesday, December 27 @ 11:42:59 PST
During the last few winters I've spent a good deal of time casting for Baby Tarpon on Florida's Rt. 41 and I have tried a lot of fly patterns. In my opinion, the Enrico Puglisi Finger Mullet is a must-have fly, right up at the top of my list for winter Tarpon in the canals and creeks. The fly is not a quick and easy tie, but it's worth its weight in gold to learn how to tie it correctly. Fortunately, one of the finest fly tiers in our area, Tom Shadley, gives classes nearby my home at his shop, Mangrove Outfitters. He's shown dozens of tiers how this fly is constructed.
In the early morning hours, the Tarpon here are more actively feeding. They will strike a Finger Mullet hard, so be ready to set the hook.
Today I hooked five Tarpon and landed one...a great day for anyone fly casting for these fish. I'll be tying up this pattern in earnest now that the colder weather has arrived.

Re: Must Have Baby Tarpon Fly: Enrico Puglisi Finger Mullet by MikePat on Thursday, January 25 @ 17:46:53 PST | Marshall, Thank you soo much for this post. You pretty much saved my trip down to Islamorada!!! It was the second to the last day down there for me and I had seen tarpon in good numbers around the docks and marinas, so I decided at night I would go for some of them. Then I sat at the (world famous) tiki bar at holiday Isle and thought to myself...Hum...baby tarpon...wait flies and fins south...must have tarpon fly...yeah must have baby tarpon fly! Pulaski?!?!? no...mullet...wait!...puglisi finger mullet!!!!! Yeah thats It. So after a trip to world wide sportsman I left with three of them. And i had a blast hooking three tarpon around 20-30 lbs. I didnt land any of them but they were a blast to fight!! Anyway about the rest of my trip. We did OK. One day with a guide and we got a couple mini jacks and some trout. And two other days we rented a boat and I caught some spanish macks and more jacks. Bottom line we had a great time and I'll deffinatly be back for more of the keys!
I just wanted to thank you marsh for posting this! |
