Tips, Ties And Tactics Golf Course Pond Patterns: Snook And Bass On The Same Fly
Posted by marshalld on Friday, December 15 @ 08:10:39 PST

I know that there are large Snook in nearby golf course ponds here in Naples. I can catch Bass who are feeding on all manner of baitfish fry, but I'm after the big brute Snook. Recently, when I hooked a Bass, a large and scary-big Snook took a swipe at the hooked Bass. One Snook has eaten a white Tom's Tantrum before.

What fly other patterns-sizes or techniques would you recommend I try for the monster Snook? Thanks...

marshalld

Pretty much all of my pond fishing experience in this area has been with three general patterns. The popper, gurgler, and a weighted fly with a twister tail. I have the most success during the first and last hours of sunlight, in the wintertime with a gurgler. I work the gurgler all different ways, but the most productive way that I have found is a hard pop, followed by a long (5sec) pause. Don't be suprised when most of the fish hit it on the pause. It is very difficult, and mostly unproductive to strip set a take like this, so try to add a small down and dirty rod set as you pull the line.

Marsh,
Right now, I haven't a clue which flies would do the trick. But, I would be happy to do some experimenting with different flies next month ;)
See ya soon!

Having a good time trying to figure it out though. I'm taking Dave's suggestions to the bank...Those Black Gartsides are deadly.

Gerry give a call when you get down here.
