Tips, Ties And Tactics DIY Florida Keys Late December: Christmas Bonefish
Posted by SteelsOnReels on Friday, December 08 @ 06:36:05 PST

I'm heading down to the keys after Christmas and would like to know where I should be focusing my attention. In the questions on this board people mention Islamorada. Is this a good place to start? I'm fairly new to saltwater fishing and don't care what I target, I just would like a reasonable shot at fish on the flats.

If anyone could suggest particular flats or general areas That I could fish this time of year I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Kevin from Canada

I'll be straight up with you. DIY in the Keys is tough...very tough. There are very limited flats that have wade in
access. Start in Islamorada and fish Sea Oats Beach. It is on the ocean side, and is hard to miss. There is some bright bottom spots there, so pick one, watch it with your fly in hand, and wait. If you see a bone in your spot, throw it at him. If your spot isnt the one, find another. After you have fished that, drive south and stop at Long Key State Park. There are huge grass flats there, but spotting bones is difficult over the dark grass. Look a couple hundred feet away, and try to look for tailing fish or nervous water or wakes for moving fish. A weed guard will be an order there. Your next stop should be Bahia Honda, a little more south than the last stop. I believe this will be your best chance at spotting fish. Keys bonefish are tough, and almost impossible without a boat and guide. Use Borski patterns to match the water depth, and if you do get a good shot at one, he might actually eat it. Have fun, enjoy the weather!
