Florida Keys Fishing: Inshore And Offshore With A Fly Rod
Posted by MikePat on Sunday, November 26 @ 07:33:22 PST
My dad and I are in the middle of planning our trip to Islamorada for January. When were there were going to go offshore one day and fish the flats for two or three days. When were offshore were not going to be using fly rods but I will be using one on the flats.
What would I most likely be fishing for? Tarpon? Bones? Snook? Permit?
Thanks

They can be very windy. 20+ mph can be expected. Don't let that get you down, just prepare for it because that is how it is. Now, from Islamorada, you usually have 2 options, the flats nearest those keys, which usually hold bones and a rare shot at a permit, and the second option which would be the 1 hour run up to flamingo. Near Flamingo your chances at bones decrease, but the opportunities to hide from the wind increase. You can expect to have opportunities at snook and redfish with the second option, and if the guide is willing to make the run, go for it, Flamingo is awesome. As far as tarpon go, in January, you might see a resident fish or two, but as far as all that "Chasing Silver" stuff goes, it usually happens after March. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions. |

I guess alot of it would have to do with the guide we decide to go with. But I'd definatly be willing to make the run for some bones if he's up to it. As we get further in the planning I let you know if I come up on any other questions, and I think I might try to go for something freshwater around maimi also so whats there? I'm pretty sure theres peacocks but I dont know what else. |

Do you have your heart set on the keys, because we have one of the coolest fisheries anywhere in the world south of Marco Island. |

Re: Florida Keys Fishing: Inshore And Offshore With A Fly Rod by MikePat on Sunday, November 26 @ 12:31:18 PST | | Yeah the peacocks were just a thought. And yes were deffinatly gong to Islamorada because its something that my dad and his friend have been doing for years and they have a place that they stay and its kind of like a tradition that Im just being brought into. |

I think that in the Keys, especially in the colder months, the more time that you spend focused on a single species, the better your chances for actually catching something. How has their success been in the past? Have you ever fished warm saltwater before? |

Re: Florida Keys Fishing: Inshore And Offshore With A Fly Rod by MikePat on Sunday, November 26 @ 13:35:57 PST | | Yeah It means alot to get to go this year. They have had good success with the guide offshore for blackfin tuna and sailfish and on the flats they have done well with bones and I'm almost positve they've gotten the occasional permit, and one day they go Inshore for snook and they try for tarpon and to me it's always seemed like they do well so uim excited, but none of them fly fish they all use spinning gear so It looks like well go with a guide who does both and I'll be the only one fly fishing which makes me a little upset but I might be able to get my dad to pick up the fly rod again..we'll have to see...he stopped fly fishing becasue he never had the time but he isn't to bad at it. |

Re: Florida Keys Fishing: Inshore And Offshore With A Fly Rod by hedrush999 on Sunday, November 26 @ 15:02:48 PST http://www.fliesandfinssouth.com | You are going to have a blast. Remember its windy, fast, and tough. Don't get discouraged with the fly rod, just be sure to learn as much as you can.
To make the most of your trip, I would do a little practice. 80 foot shots into a paper plate on a windy day. Quick pick ups and replacement of the fly. Keep in mind, 2 backcasts is usually too much, and your opportunity might be gone by then. Most importantly, make sure you can double haul without shifting your weight or moving your feet. Most fish are spooked by this over anything else. |

Scott S3S with a 9 wt. Rio Triangle Taper line. Everyone that has ever thrown my setups say that it is the best thing they have ever casted, and I agree. An 8 wt. will work well too, but I like the extra "punching power" that I know the 9 gives me. |

Re: Florida Keys Fishing: Inshore And Offshore With A Fly Rod by MikePat on Monday, November 27 @ 11:38:48 PST | | Ok...I was thinking mabey a scott v2 rod, and havent thought about a reel yet, buit the v2 falls in my price range and I want a qualtiy rod, so do you think that would be a good choice? I was also thinking about a sage launch, or an orvis clearwater. and i'll probably get a nine wieght, and then I can use it for local pike along with stripers and blues, and salmon, so I could deffinatly use a 9 weight for some other fish as well. Alright headrush I appreciate your help. |

Re: Florida Keys Fishing: Inshore And Offshore With A Fly Rod by MikePat on Monday, November 27 @ 12:25:45 PST | | You know what ...correct me if im wrong but dont a need a fast action rod for the flats, or let me rephrase that, shouldnt I have a fast action rod for the flats to get tighter loops to cut through the wind? And now that I look into it, the v2 is medium action., so just let me know what you would get. My price limit is 200$ |
