If DIY is your game, you will be better off fishing the beaches and passes near St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Expect to see and catch mostly ladyfish, trout, jacks, and possibly a redfish. In April, there are usually some big tarpon around down south of Tampa, and a couple days of guided fishing should be well worth it. |

Re: What Can You Catch From Shore With A Fly Rod: Tampa Area Fly Fishing by mro on Saturday, March 10 @ 10:07:14 PST | I lived in Tampa then Seminole and Largo in the 70's. Don't know if access or conditions are the same. Last few times I've visited Florida was amazed how much construction had happened during my absence. That said....
Tampa side at Gandy bridge. South side of bridge approach has a low sea wall and a lot of grass. Need to fish when tide is moving. Have caught trout, red's and a few snook.
Just across from there used to be a place that made big flat barges. Had to park on street and a few minuets walk to get to water. Used to fish here at night. There were several large lights that put enough light on the water. Spot was "best" known for snook. (used a spinning rod here, live shrimp hooked thru horn and tossed out under lights to swim around)
________
On the Saint Pete/Clearwater side......
I used to take "newbe fly fisherman" out to a few of the self pay toll bridges that lead to Fort Desoto. Day or night could be fun and catch mostly trout and ladyfish (lots a small ladyfish especially at night) occasional jack. With weighted fly fished near bottom occasional red. Never caught any snook here.
Clearwater pass from just in front of the bridge (good wading area) was hit but mostly miss. Liked to fish incoming tide. Never know what you can catch here. I've caught mostly jacks, but also caught my largest snook (14 lbs) and largest red (6 lbs) on a fly here.
Biggest fish I've ever hooked while wading was there. Never got to see it. I was standing in about 3 1/2 feet of water, 100 yards from bridge. Using a #7 Courtland rod with a #2 Fin Nor reel. Had cast out and was letting my streamer sink. What ever it was picked it up on a dead drift and made a bee line for deeper water and the bridge and nothing I could do to slow it down. When it got to the bridge I clamped down on the real (burnt finger time) and it broke me off on a piling. Could have been ? Guessing it was either a 30+ pound snook or a very big jack. Whole thing lasted less than ten seconds, quite a rush.
Many more spots but you have to live there to find em.
