Tips, Ties And Tactics East Winds, Light Surf: Beach Snook NOW!

Diane and I had 2 hours to relax so we headed for 33rd Ave. here in Naples on the beach. the East wind was blowing over land so the wave action was minimal ...AND, we had a high tide. I strung up the rod and attatched a small white fly while Diane settled under the umbrella with a book.

As I walked the shoreline, I saw bait being crashed by who-knows-what, and because the water was cloudy with silt, I decided to blind cast the crashes. GOOD IDEA. First cast brought a furious strike from a good Snook who spit the fly because I was taken by surprise!. Still getting my Beach Legs, but I had a confidence I was over fish.

Later on, I cast to other crash sites and landed several Lady Fish and this Snook that was shy of the 27" to 37" slot but my line hand hook set was the key.

As I scanned the water, looking down, a huge 40" Snook had settled in next to the shore right in front of me. I was stunned at how big this fish was. I then did the WRONG thing. I moved. In a flash, the big Snook spooked. Had I remained motionless, I might have had an opportunity to cast to the beast. Rookie stuff.

Maybe I'll be more cool next time, but this fish was enormous and spooked me. Gotta learn to be steady.

Marshall, this sounds so exciting.. I fly into Naples occasionally as I am a charter pilot. I haven't fished the area, but from what you posted, it sure sounds like it could get the juices going! Don't worry about getting the shakes around big fish, it is only human :o) I hope to cure the same ill by taking my folks up on the offer of a week in Patagonia, first week of December.

Thanks for the info, and hope to hear more of your exploits

Paul
