Marquesas / Key West Fly Rod Permit: Catch 'Em If You Can
Posted by hedrush999 on Tuesday, September 19 @ 21:24:00 PDT
For over the past 50 years, Key West, Florida has been a mecca for the development of inshore fly fishing. Tarpon are most likely the main attraction, but big permit have to be a close second. Near Key West, permit can be found on many flats, around the edges of the finger channels that lead to the ocean, and in more unlikely areas.
A one hour early morning boat ride can lead you west to the Marquesas. A small protected atoll, just less than 30 miles west of The Conch Republic. The islands that make up the Marquesas form a large basin in the middle of them that has a few good choices of flats that vary from 2-4 feet deep. Perfect permit depth. Within the basin are a few small creeks that can take you into a tannic protected pond that some call the Green Room. Permit can be found in this "backcountry" series of flats
When trying to locate permit, look for good size pushes across the flat. Some of these disturbances can be spotted moving towards you from 100 yards out, giving the angler proper preparation time. Wait until the fish get into range, and drop a fly right in its face. Maybe it will dercide to take it.
