Banning Fishing On The Trail (Route 41): Angling On Foot In Naples
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Wednesday, June 14 @ 15:33:11 PDT
This is just a heads up on a proposal to ban all angling on U.S. Rt. 41, aka the Tamiami Trail, between Rt. 29 (Everglades City) and Miami. It sounds as if they want this ban for motorist safety, although the details are not known yet.
For all of you who enjoy fishing the trail, or have fished the trail before, please take a minute and post a response. Tell everyone about a memorable angling experience on the trail, so if need be we can provide support with our words.
More information will be made available on this fishing ban proposal, and I will try to keep everyone up to date.

Re: Banning Fishing On The Trail (Route 41): Angling On Foot In Naples by MarshallD (marshtd@adelphia.net) on Thursday, June 15 @ 04:26:16 PDT http://www.flyanglersguide.com | There's precious little water available to anglers on foot in the Naples area....and now a proposal to eliminate trail fishing. Is there a link to the news story on Naples Daily News? I'd be willing to write a letter to the editor....
We need to find out more about this proposal and how to fight it.

Find it on Naples Daily News web site
Improving access and safety for anglers should be pushed. Catwalks, paths should be built near the bridges. |

I just moved to Naples this last November and the quality access to angling by foot (ie: the trail, beaches, etc.) is one of the main reasons I picked Naples to live.
Thanks to everyone for being proactive!

If this continues to happen that I will have to scrap Naples as a holiday destination. |

Re: Banning Fishing On The Trail (Route 41): Angling On Foot In Naples by MarshallD (marshtd@adelphia.net) on Thursday, June 15 @ 14:50:42 PDT http://www.flyanglersguide.com | In the Naples Daily News article, a Collier County Commissioner took an angler-friendly stance on the issue. I wrote the following note to him
"Dear Commissioner Colleta,
I applaud your comment in the Naples Daily News about citizens losing fishing
access points in Collier County..."one inch at a time." I think you are in touch
with this trend and I applaude your defense of sporting access.
I am a fly fishing guide and live in Naples.
I wonder if more warning signs could be placed that say, "HYDROPLANING DANGER"
or "Watch for Roadside Anglers" ? Might you suggest these types of signs?
Prohibition is not the way. Any NO FISHING signs will only alienate citizens and
most anglers will disregard them. Prosecutions for offenses will be deemed a
rediculous waste of law enforcement time by citizens.
Many states and counties enhance fishing areas by providing handicapped access,
pathways, roadside turn offs and parking areas. Any good effort in forming a
coalition to raise money for these angler-friendly amenities would likely find
some serious money being donated, not only from individuals, but from angling
and sporting groups as well.
I'd applaud your looking in to that.
Thanks for listening."
