Tips, Ties And Tactics Flyfishing In Clearwater: Any Less Traveled DIY Opportunities
Posted by icthus on Tuesday, May 30 @ 12:53:10 PDT

I am a native to Clearwater Beach, Florida but found the love of my life and five years of school in Nashville,Tn so needless to say here I am. I am heaading down your way in September to do some fly fishing while my wife lays on the beach and looks hot. Is there any resorts or hotels that have tailing snook, reds, or sea trout around where I could just fish off the beach when the sun is going down?

Secondly, I dont expect for top secret info, but could you give me some kind of spots that arent commercialized for fly fishing. Any help would be great and if you ever head up here to Nashvegas I will defenitly show you all the good holes and runs aound the Caneyfork.

Thank you advance for the help.

Icthus

I'm not too familiar with the beach fishing scene up there, but if it is anything like it is around Naples, then September might be your best time to walk the beaches in search of snook and jacks. Snook roam the shallow troughs, literally inches from the sand, opportunistically feeding on bait and sand fleas. The two best flies that I have used on these fish are the gurgler, makes a lot of noise and seems to grab their attention, and something small and weighted that resembles a sand flea. These small weighted flies are best cast ahead of the fish, and barely moved as the snook gets close. If you see the fish stop on the fly then strip set because he most likely has it in his mouth. Usually you will not feel the fish take the fly, so don't miss the opportunity. Keep in mind that a guided trip in a boat will be your best bet in Fishing most of Florida's waters, but if you want to head down to the Naples area, let me know.
