Tips, Ties And Tactics Thank You From AvidDavid: Orvis Mach Reel Winner
Posted by AvidDAvid on Monday, May 22 @ 14:07:33 PDT

I logged on the FliesandFinsSouth.com a few weeks ago and noted that a decision had been made about the winner of the Orvis Mach IV Reel. I was unbelievably pleased to see that I had been selected to receive the reel for a post about setting hooks. The announcement was followed by a pm from hedrush99 asking me to call him to give him contact information. After having read so much from so many of the regulars on fliesandfins.com, it was fun to speak directly to hedrush and to express my excitement. Several days later a small box was delivered to my home. Inside was the beautiful reel. It is now fishing season, so I am trying to spend some of my spare time fishing rather than posting and dreaming. Reality is that the new reel is particularly attractive on my 9’ TLS 8 weight midflex rod with its black reel mount.

I need to thank several of our friends who made much of this possible. First, I would like to thank Everglades Angler in Naples, Florida for providing the reel to FliesandFinsSouth.com so that it could be offered as a prize. Second, I would like to thank the staff at FliesandFinsSouth.com who formed the prize selection committee that selected a question as the winning post. Third, I would like to thank Dave (hedrush99) for his pivotal role in overseeing FliesandFinsSouth.com, for assuring that the reel worked on bonefish (for leaving the backing on the reel) and for packing and sending the reel to me. Fourth, I would like to thank MarshallD for his responses to the post. Please note that I only posted a question concerning setting the hook. MarshallD actually responded to my question with several valuable informational posts. Therefore, I credit Marsh with making my posted question seem interesting.

I would like to make some comments about the reel, the Orvis Mach IV. This is a wonderful execution of fly fishing technology. It is a finely tuned machine. The spool turns smoothly in both directions. As described in the catalog, the drag mechanism offers unbelievably smooth line release (as smooth as a baby’s bottom). There are roughly 20 numbered positions (10 positions with two full rotations of the knob) for the center mounted drag, giving an extremely wide range of drag adjustments ranging from extreme drag for large fish on fat leaders down to infinitessimally smooth and fine controlled drag useful for fine tippets and smaller fish like those that I am accustomed to catching. I am amazed by the sheer simplicity of design, the quality production workmanship as well as the smooth operational characteristics of this reel.

Some of my favorite comments summarize what the reel does not do. It makes no grinding, or metal-to-metal rubbing sounds. There is no brash clicking just a subtle tic-tic-tic as the reel is wound. There is an even more subtle tic-tic-tic as line is stripped from the reel via the drag, thereby assuring smooth rather than jerky line release.

I am pleased and honored to be the recipient of this valuable reel. I only hope that I can honor it with suitable fish to test its superior muscle so that I might post pictures. Thank you, fliesandfinssouth.com, for the honor and the beautiful reel.
