Fighting Tarpon With A Fly Rod: Put The Wood To ‘Em
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Thursday, May 11 @ 05:37:23 PDT
Battling giant tarpon with a fly rod is no easy feat. Although, when done properly, an angler can wear out one of these monsters more efficiently than with conventional tackle.
Most fisherman using fly rods choose to use a 10-12 weight outfit between 9 and 10 feet long. A rod that long creates a lot more leverage than a standard issue 7 foot spinning rod. Combine that leverage with a fly line that might as well be a rope, and you have a machine that seems basically designed for fighting big fish in shallow water.
When hooked, a tarpon will generally take to the air immediately and run like mad. After the initial surprise is over, the fish will usually begin to try and dog you by pulling, hard. This is when the angler can start to do his/her work and gain the upper hand. When retrieving the line, short hard erratic pulls are generally more effective than constant pressure in one direction. Pulling the fish at different angles in the opposite direction it is trying to travel can disorient the fish and make him tire out quickly. Remember, keep the rod low, “bow to the silver king” when it jumps, and put the wood to ‘em.
