Best Place In Florida Keys For Fishing Around Christmas: Holiday Get Away
Posted by coachman on Tuesday, April 25 @ 05:25:19 PDT
I'm planning a trip to the Keys between Christmas and New Years and I'm soliciting ideas for the best place to go. Part of my trip will have to include a couple of days at
Key West (spelled girlfriend) but I'm open to other areas of the Keys for prime fishing that time of the year. Any suggestions?

This time of year, the water temperatures drop and the winds can pick up, but the fishing in the backcountry can be great. Islamorada would be a good bet for a couple days as you could chase the big three in the ocean and run 45 minutes into the park and hammer snook and reds. |

Diane and I just got back from 2 days in Islamorada and one night at key west..(sp. girlfriend) We drove from Naples.
My advice is to stay at Sunset Inn Motel, Islamorada...ask for room by the pool. Enjoy sunsets at Lorelie tikki bar (within walking distance of motel) Sunset Inn isn't way upscale or fancy, but reasonable rates...and is close to DIY flats like Nancy's Beach, Long Key State Park (10 mi) and Sea Oats Beach (3 Mi) The lodging was fine w/girlfriend who enjoyed a book under a palm while I waded at Long Key.
Dave's right about keeping your guided trip options open because the winds can be a big issue esp on the ocean side. Going toward Flamingo with an experienced guide gives you a chance at backcountry fishing when the ocean side is rough.
Key West we stayed at "The Southernmost Motel" which will be pricey during Dec. but within a walk to Duval St. where the action (....shopping..bars, etc.) is. We had a fine meal at Louis Back Door restaurant...also very pricey but special.
35th St. on Marathon just before 7-mi bridge...Keys Fisheries...try the Lobster Reuben....wow.
ps. the fishing wasn't good...too much wind...but the food was good! |
