Tips, Ties And Tactics The Bendback Fly With A Twist: New Patterns On Worm Hooks
Posted by hedrush999 on Monday, April 10 @ 13:38:46 PDT

From what I've heard, the bendback fly has been catching fish for a while now. Its tied on a long shanked hook where the eye and about a quarter inch of the shank have been bent 45 degrees away from the point of the hook so when the craft fur, deer hair, etc. are tied on to the bend, the material will ride through the hook in effect acting as a weed guard. This fly, when tied with eyes rides hook up, and can usually be stripped through cover without hanging up.

Lately, some big name guides in the Everglades have been using a regular plastic worm hook to tie these "bendbacks" without having to bend the hook. It seems as if their hook up ratios have increased dramatically. Most worm hooks are wide gapped and made from light wire, which will pierce more like a needle than a railroad tie. I believe they are easier to straighten, but I've tied up a few and am willing to put it to the test.

Re: The Bendback Fly With A Twist: New Patterns On Worm Hooks

This is interesting. I looked for various hooks online and there are a lot of possibilities, many (worm hooks) with a brief portion of the shank just behind the eye that is in line with the point of the hook. These, with the proper material tied in, as hedrush has indictated, may provide the "weed guard" effect. Others are already made with the bend that you described (jig hooks). There may be an advantage to using hooks that are manufactured to the desired shape rather than bent by the person tying the fly. I suspect that the bend created during tying may become a weak spot in the hook.

Additionally, I have purchased clousers tied on straight hooks with the "bucktail" tied at an angle to the hook shank so that it has that "weed guard" appearance (and possibly the effect, too)
