Tips, Ties And Tactics First Time In The Salt: Everglades Tarpon
Posted by coachman on Monday, April 10 @ 13:24:05 PDT

I had my first experience saltwater fly fishing this past Saturday with Marshall. We had a great time chasing tarpon on the Trail.
Here's my tip: Learn to do the double haul cast if you don't already have it mastered. With expert advice I was able to cast into the strong wind fairly confidently (though at times nothing seemed to help my cast). It's amazing how much further you can cast with this technique.

I'm so hooked on saltwater opportunities and can't wait until I can do it again. I loved the Everglades area and can see why folks talk about it so much.

I have to say Chris, that you pretty much mastered everything with the forward haul in a matter of minutes! That wind was fierce and casting between the Gators while concentrating on the retreives was hard for ANY expert caster....but you "gotter done" ! !

I went out there today and around 9 AM, I switched over to a Puglisi-style mullet pattern, small. I stripped it in a little faster than I usually do, just to vary the speed. You never know when they're going to hit....I just kept saying to myself, "They WANT to play, They WANT to play...

WHAM! I had one on, jumping three times...then he was dogging it, and the hook held! Only three or four minute fight until I brought him over to the bank. I contemplated taking a quick picture because he was the largest I've landed so far, but rather than to weaken him further, I reached down and yanked on the tippet (25lb) and snapped him off.

"They want to play" is my new confidence-mantra. See you in Maine and thanks for a terrific day last week. Good luck at EO.
