Tips, Ties And Tactics Flies Tied on Circle Hooks: Whats The Deal
Posted by AvidDavid on Monday, March 20 @ 18:09:52 PST

Yesterday, I visited a local saltwater fly shop in my home town and was surprized to find that the owner was selling some Clouser-like streamers that he had tied on "circle" hooks. I believe that circle hooks are thought to be less likely to cause serious harm to the fish (a desireable trait especially for CPR = catch-photograph-release). Having seen some cable TV shows where circle hooks are the rage in saltwater, I was wondering if others have used flies tied on circle hooks. I realize that setting the hook is a whole different ball game, requiring phenomenally different reactions than what seems natural to me. So the questions:

1) Has anyone had success with circle hook flies?
2) How do you change your hook setting response for circle hooks (how do you change your reflexes)?
3) Has anyone used circle hook flies in fresh water?
4) Does anyone have any suggestions?

I can tell you first hand, that here in Southwest Florida, flies with circle hooks are definately not the rage, although I believe we will see more of it in the near future. I have fished a lot of circle hooks on spinning gear, but never on a fly. I can tell you that when fishing these hooks, a hook set is unnecessary, all you need to do to bury the hook is come tight with the fish, which I believe could be done in the same manner with a fly rod. I can believe that the response is the same, you never want to jerk the fly with the rod, you always want to pull the string and strip set the fish. I'm going to get out my vise and tie a couple up and give them a try next week, I'll let you know if I learn anything.

Thanks Hedrush! I'll be looking for what you come up with.

I think that many of us are concerned and wish to cause minimal harm to the fish that we release. I think that the objective of the circle hook coupled with the different hook set technique is that the hook ends up in the corner of the fish's mouth, rather than in the softer tissues of the ?pharynx? thereby causing less longterm harm to the fish.

If the hook stays in the corner of the mouth, we may also have some benefits in getting the hook back more easily from some toothy fish.

Anyone else?

I've seen circle hooks in action, or actually, the lack there of, for some time now. Lots of circle hook flies have come aboard my boat for about the last five years or so and after watching for a while, I pretty much don't let customers use them anymore. At least, not if they want to hook fish.
A circle hook is a BAIT hook. Period. I'm sure some fly guys have had some success with them, but a good sharp J-hook is far and away more effective at hooking a fish. And while a circle hook may have better holding once hooked, near as I can tell, on most of the species I fish for here in S. Fl. using a circle hook decreases your hook-up to strike ratio by at least seventy percent, probably more. I think begginers and people with no reaction time to a strike may do better with a circle hook, because they do just what you want to do when fishing a circle hook...nothing.
