Tips, Ties And Tactics IGFA Tarpon Leaders: I'm Through With 'Em

Anybody that has fly fished for Tarpon has probably seen what has become a standard issue leader for big tarpon. A piece of class tippet, longer than 15 inches (usually 20lb), with a bimini twist in each end, connected to a less than 12 inch piece of shock tippet (usually 80lb). That whole rig is either blood knotted or looped to a butt section of 40-50lb mono which has been nail knotted to the fly.

Here is the scenario. You want to catch a big tarpon and have booked a day or two to do so. Are you fishing exclusively for a world recoord, probably not. Do you want to catch the fish or just jump it and break it off, saving yourself a lot of work? If indeed you are looking to land the monster, with no regard for a world record, It is recommended that you let your guide know your intentions and request that he/she tie on something a little heavier. Like a straight 4 foot piece of 80lb mono. Save the class leaders for when you have landed a bunch of these beasts and can react a little more naturally to what the fish does. It happpens fast, and can be over even faster. Give yourself a chance.

I agree! "Give yourself a chance." If your objective is to stack the odds in your favor so as to subdue a huge 100 lb. Tarpon on the fly...give yourself the edge. So, tie your leaders in a way that gives you more strength where you need it. I'm going to do this. A big Tarpon broke me off recently. I failed to examine my leader before casting. Maybe it was a nick in the leader, but the leader broke in a 39 lb section and shouldn't have.

I want a leader that will get the shock tippet through the eye of smaller flies....AND cast/turn over bigger flies. So, "Tarpon leader design" becomes more important.(!)

Tarpon are so unpredictable. All we can do is get over them, cast to them and BE PREPARED..

Why wouldn't a length of 60 lb flouro do as well as a knotted leader?
