Flies And Fins South
Use fliesandfinssouth.com to post any fly fishing tips or tricks that you have learned while fly fishing the South. If you have a question, ask it. A question answered and archived will serve as a tip for someone else down the road. We understand that fly fishing is an ever learnng sport so if you have a tip pass it along to another fly fisherman. We believe that everybody is constantly learning, and it is not possible to "know it all". Enjoy.

March usually means the start of good things to come for South Florida fishing. The water starts to warm and big snook and redfish come out of their winter haunts just about the time tarpon start to show up in fishable numbers. This March we decided to say the hell with all of that, and with the exception of a few days in the Bahamas chasing bones, we decided to devote the month to chasing permit off Key West. March can be an epic month for big permit, but this year the wind was a little too strong for a little too long. But we did manage a few. |

Louiiana Redfish Preview (watch Quicktime video)
Redfish inhabit the warmer waters of the Atlantic Ocean, around Florida, and throughout the Gulf Of Mexico into Texas. They come in all shapes and sizes, some with distinct markings, some without. Reds eat everything from crabs, shrimp, eels, baitfish, and of course flies. I haven't seen anywhere that redfish eat flies better than the bayous and marshes of Southern Louisiana. Every redfish that I have ever caught and thought was a good one has now been trumped. We found ourselves in the right place at the right time, and have some video to prove it.

Redfish: Schooling Everwhere But In The Chokoloskee
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Monday, April 28 @ 12:28:50 PDT
Redfish have a tendency to school up in big numbers. For whatever reason, safety, spawning, company, the schools that call the gulf coast home, have created popular fisheries around them. So popular that there are a couple of pro fishing tours exploiting these schools of fish. Whether you are looking for fish in Charlotte Harbor, Louisiana, Flamingo, etc., your chances of bumping into a big school is pretty good.

Lefty Kreh: Can He Fish?
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Monday, March 10 @ 09:07:11 PDT
Recently, I have been hearing the name Lefty Kreh more than I have in a while. Maybe it is his affiliation with Temple Fork Outfitters, or maybe because he has released a new book or something. I can honestly say that I have never read any of his work, but I do have some respect for the guy. He has made a name for himself and done a lot of good for the sport, I have heard.

Tarpon Leaders: Florida Keys Style
Posted by pescador on Wednesday, February 27 @ 05:09:44 PST
Hi,
I am going to florida and am fishing for tarpon for my first time. I,m going in May and understand that leaders have to be 10-12ft long in order to sneek up on shy fish. I found rio makes hand tied leaders but there only 4 feet in length and cost a fortune. I would like any tips or ideas. I will be in the florida bay area near or around islamorada. Any details that would help make my trip less stressful would be much apreciated.

Miami International Boat Show: Hells Bay Boatworks
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Monday, February 18 @ 08:49:53 PST
This past weekend I had the opportunity to tour the Miami International Boat Show and check out some new boats, some old boats, and some gear. Nothing really jumped out as the next greatest thing, but the most Hype that I heard was about the new Hells Bay Boca Grande. They basiclly took the Marquesa, a big boat in my opinion, and made it a little bit bigger. It seems wider, and the hydrodynamics changed a bit allowing it to handle a chop better than the Marquesa, while floating shallower.

Saltwater Fly Line: Fly Fishing Gear Tips
Posted by 2Stroke_Smoke on Tuesday, January 29 @ 20:08:50 PST
I am fairly new to fly fishing and would like some recommendations on saltwater fly lines. I am using a Ross CLA 5 paired with a 9wt St. Croix Avid series rod. I have had good success with 9wt line and would prefer to stay in that line class - but I am open to suggestions. I spend the majority of my time chasing Redfish, Trout and Snook in east central florida. Any recommendations as to a good casting, easy to manage line would be greatly appreciated.

Bringing The North South: Chesapeake Crab Flies For Bonefish!
Posted by Jeepfish on Tuesday, January 29 @ 20:07:17 PST
Howdy gents,
I'm brand new to the forum here. What a relief to have found you all! I've been in Miami for four years now, loving everything Biscayne Bay has to offer. I am obsessed with bonefish! I always get a kick out of catching bonefish on crab patterns I once tied and threw for stripers. Originally dubbed the "Crab colored Clouser" by Joe Bruce formerly of the "Fisherman's Edge" in Catonsville, MD (author and good friend of Lefty), the pattern was originally a deep water clouser variation tied with tan, olive, and white bucktail with gold pearl flash and just a hint of a blue flashabou sort of wing. I have found this pattern to be excellent, especially if tied with a piece of mono for a weedguard, on grass flats around sand key and the finger flats near soldier key.

Louisiana Redfish: Fishing The Marsh For January Monsters
Posted by fliesandfinssouth on Wednesday, January 23 @ 10:22:07 PST
When the winter rolls around, most people think about heading to wild tropical locations in search of some of the best fishing opportunities of the year. Well overlooked are the marshes of southern Louisiana, which is probably the most healthy fishery this country has to offer. Hungry redfish move onto shallow mud flats year round in search of an easy meal. In January the bigger breeding fish can be plentiful, as they are looking to gorge post spawn.

Snook: Night Fishing Naples Area
Posted by Gorgefly on Sunday, December 30 @ 04:37:15 PST
I am going to be down in the Naples area (hotel is next to Delnor Wiggins State park) next week and I was curious as to wether there are any good places close by to fish from the beach or to wade? I don't even have a full day off from biz meetings but I would like to know if there is a possibility of beach fishing day and night close by?
The first morning my meetings start after lunch so I was thinking of renting a kayak over on Marco at Isle of Capri marina. Is there a place close by within paddling distance anyone would recommend?
I'm a Wash. St. trout/steelhead fishermen and will be bringing my 8wt. with a multi-tip system...floaters best right?

Crab Patterns: Little Crunchy Morsels For Striped Bass
Posted by gilly09 on Sunday, October 28 @ 11:44:56 PDT
Hi Guys,
Shallow water striped bass angler here.
I like to target bass on the mudflats as they feed on the shrimp and crabs.
The bass will root around like bonefish.
